Mr. Coffee ECMP40 Pod Pump Espresso & Cappuccino Maker Review
Recently, I purchased this espresso maker used. I did a good deal of research first and saw a number of good and bad reviews, so now that I’ve used it a number of times, I wanted to share my experiences.
I’ve only owned it for a few weeks, so I can’t make any comments on its durability, though it seems as solidly built as any of the other Mr. Coffee products I’ve purchased in the past.
For everyone complaining about the quality of the brew and/or froth, I feel it’s a great mid-range espresso maker. It will not brew a precisely perfect cup of espresso, nor give a perfect, stiff micro-bubble froth on milk. If you’re looking for an espresso maker of that class, you won’t find one for under 0 (or likely for under 00). That said, I believe I can make an espresso/latte/cappuccino that easily rivals any I’ve had at a coffee shop. With a bit of practice and some knowledge of how to make espresso, you can make an excellent drink every time.
If you’re having problems with crema, check your roast and your grind. Although I feel a 0 espresso maker is good enough for a decent cup of espresso, skimping on the grinder is not an option. I use a Solis Maestro Plus. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants a good, conical burr grinder. A good quality, freshly roasted espresso bean, ground finely immediately before brewing (that is key; in my experience, pre-ground espresso rarely gives a good crema or good taste), and tamped properly gives a good amount of rich, thick crema with this maker. It certainly could be better, but for a mid-range espresso maker, it does the job very well. One complaint I did have is that no tamper comes with the maker (unless you count the plastic measuring spoon as a tamper). You’ll have to buy one separate and it is worth the investment.
For those complaining about the froth, I found that a little bit of practice will produce a nice, stiff froth with small bubbles. I use 1% milk, and I know that less milk fat makes it easier to froth the milk. It won’t produce any micro-bubbles (I doubt any 0 maker will), but with the frothing wand, “mini”-bubbles are no problem. I’ve been able to get a thick enough froth to do my own latte art (though I am by no means a good artist!).
For those complaining about the amount of water, I can make two full, double shot cups of espresso without refilling the water tray (refilling the grounds cup for each cup of course). I wouldn’t expect an espresso maker to be able to brew more without a refill.
As far as the noise, it is a little noisy; however, it’s no louder than any other pump-driven espresso makers I’ve seen/used.
Overall, I believe this is an excellent option for anyone looking for a moderately priced, mid-range espresso maker. If you really want a good cup of espresso/latte/cappuccino, save your money on a moderately priced maker like this one and spend a little more on the grinder and the grade of espresso roast you buy.
